Tire comes off horse trailer, strikes tractor trailer, killing driver

Around 8:15 this morning on Interstate 81 a horse trailer being pulled by a southbound pickup shed a wheel that bounced across the highway around mile marker 130 and went through the windshield of a northbound tractor-trailer.


Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said the 2007 Volvo tractor-trailer then struck a guard rail and that the driver died at the scene. He would not speculate about the cause of death but said the tire would have been traveling with great force. He did not identify the driver, who was working for Timco Logistics Systems out of Texas. He said the driver of the 1999 Ford pickup is from the Roanoke area and has been charged with operating with defective equipment.
