I just saw this story about the
Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue being under quarantine for equine strangles. This is truly devastating when an organization such as the RVHR has to deal with 33 rescue horses. If any of you in our Horseva community can help with a donation or dropping off some supplies at the gate, I am sure the staff at the Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue will be forever greatful. Here is the story from wsls.com
FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA --
The Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue (RVHR) has been placed under quarantine.
RVHR management says the quarantine is voluntary, and came after five horses came down with equine strangles.
According to the
American Association of Equine Practioners (AAEP), strangles is caused by bacteria infecting the upper airway and lymph nodes of a horse's head and neck. The AAEP describes the disease as highly contagious, and particularly effects younger horses.
Key signs of the disease are: A fever of above 101.5 degrees fahrenheit (up to 106.0), a runny nose, enlarged lymph nodes in the space between a horse's lower jaw bones, coughing, difficulty in swallowing, and depressed with no appetite.
The RVHR says the five horses have been moved from the RVHR's general population, and no one will be allowed on the property, other than the RVHR's normal seven volunteers.
All 33 horses at the RVHR are having their temperatures taken two times per day, according to the RVHR, and each horse will be tested and vaccinated once the other horses have recovered. The RVHR estimates this process will cost
$219.50 per horse, for a total cost of
$6,496.50.
If you would like to make a donations, the RVHR is asking for the following items:
