The Emily Jane Hilscher Memorial Horse Show Is This Weekend At Virginia Tech

The Emily Jane Hilscher Memorial Horse Show will be this Saturday April 16, 2011 starting at 8:30AM
Location: Alphin Stuart Arena - Virginia Tech

We Remember Emily Jane Hilscher

The Emily Jane Hilscher Memorial Horse Show is a Hunter/Jumper/Western/Driving and Gymkhana show with all proceeds going to the Emily Jane Hilscher Memorial Scholarship.

****This Horse Show is a Southwest District 4-H Qualifying Show****

Emily had a great sense of humor, and a sensibility beyond her years. She was a skilled horsewoman,
an animal lover, imaginative artisan, and enthusiastic cook. She was a great sister, daughter and friend.
Emily Jane was a freshman at Virginia Tech, majoring in Animal and Poultry Sciences. Growing up in the rural community of Rappahannock County, Virginia Emily loved the beauty of the mountains, the rolling fields, the abundant wildlife and farm animals that surrounded her. Her passion for horses was evident from the age of 3. She was an accomplished rider who became a member of the Virginia Tech equestrian team in the spring of 2007, as well as a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. She showed great promise as an intercollegiate rider having a strong work ethic, a positive attitude and a great deal of determination.

Emily Jane had a passion for people as well. Emily was always trying to save someone or something. She was in constant search for justice and worked to right wrongs without regard for her popularity. She just wanted people to be happy. She celebrated the incredible diversity of her friends who were young and old, made of many races and who had many talents. It was the love of Rappahannock County and its people that inspired her to study animal science in hope of returning to the county after graduation to make it her permanent home.

Photo of The Week 4-4-2011

There were a couple of photos that I loved but couldn't decide which one to use for our Photo Of The Week this week. To celebrate the arrival of spring, I decided to publish both photos.  Happy Trails!

This photo is of Daryl Ash Roland spraying her horse with cold water (from her mouth). The horse seems to be enjoying the attention. This is a nice summer photo...I can't wait for SUMMER!

This is a great photo sent in on our Horseva Facebook Page - This is Laura Martlock and her horse Shadow. Shadow seems to be in a fiesty mood because he is sticking his tongue out at the photographer.

Who Knew You Could Jump A Cow!

This story reminds me of when I was a little girl. I begged my mom and step-dad for a horse every day for three years until they were so beat down they got me a horse on my 13th birthday. Meet Regina Mayer and her cow Luna:

(photo AP - Story from Yahoo News - Tues April 5, 5:11AM)

Regina Mayer jumps with her cow Luna over a hurdle in Laufen, southern Germany, on Tuesday, March 29, 2011. When Regina Mayer's parents dashed her hopes of getting a horse, the 15-year-old didn't go sulk in her room. Instead, the resourceful teen turned to a cow called Luna to make her dream come true. Hours of training and tons of treats, cajoling and caresses later, the results are impressive. Not only do the two regularly go on long rides together through the picturesque southern German countryside, they even do jumps over a homemade hurdle of beer crates and painted logs.
